Backing You Rehearsal

The afternoon was taken up by all the small details of the wedding that needed to be ironed out. Now was the time I dreaded. It was also the time that bookmarked close to the end of my torture. Wayne stood on the other side of the beach from me with Timmy and Trent. Waynes back was to me, but I kept catching Trents eye. I stood listening to Beckys instructions. I had never been in a wedding before and was anxious about it and Wayne. Then I heard her say the last thing I wanted to hear.

"Could you all pair up with who youll be walkin down the aisle with!" She called out loudly for everyone to hear. Lily began rushing people to their partners before taking her place at the back of the line. I look over at Wayne and his eyes catch mine. I stand there not moving. I was in the spot I was suppose to be, he wasn . I watch him slowly make his way over to me. He looked good as always in a plain white T-shirt that stretch over his upper body and shoulders. The white cotton material also stretched around his big biceps. It fit loosely over his stomach. His dark jeans fit him loosely. His square toed boots completing his usual look.

"Matron and Maid of honor come over here at the end of the line." Sammy and I did as we were told. Sammy stood with Lukes cousin. Wayne was standing next to me.

"Jeez, girl, look like ur part of a weddin not a funeral!" Becky said loudly. I swallowed hard praying she wasn speaking to me. I look at her and my eyes go wide when I realized she was in fact talking to me. Her sharp gaze looking right at me. I fake the nicest smile I could.

"Shut it." Wayne barked at her. I look down at the sand when Beckys face contorted into a scowl.

"I ought too!" I heard Becky murmur but she thankfully walked away. She was lining the pairs up as she went. I was surprised that Wayne had spoken up for me. I peak up at him through my lashes. He looked out into the lake stoically. Not paying any attention to me. Becky lined everyone of the bridesmaids and groomsmen up by order. Woman on the left, men on the right.

"Now the flower girl and ring bearers aren here unfortunately, but they go right before the bride."

Luke stood where the ceremonial arch would be. I knew the wedding pictures would be amazing. Stella, Heather and Ronny showed up after we were out of our dresses and on to the next task. They are currently taking random pictures of every moment.

"Music!" Becky bellowed. Right then a slow, light, melody of a country song came through the black speakers on the beach. Ana and Timmy were the first to start down the aisle.

"Slower!" Becky barked. I looked anywhere but at Wayne. Which meant I looked down at my sandals and his boots. Every time I looked up I was too tempted to look at him. I held my hands in front of me. They were laced and overlapping each other.

I let out a breath when the pair before Sammy and Lukes cousin, Eli started slowly down the aisle. Wayne and I simultaneously take small steps forward not touching each other once.

Sammy looked back at me before she started her slow walk. A sad smile graced her face. I tried so hard to give her a genuine smile but all I could do was a fake one. I felt a soft nudge on my arm. I look over seeing Wayne holding his arm out for me to take. I swallowed hard. I lace my small arm around his big one. Placing my hand on his tense bicep. His body relaxed under my touch after a moment. Such a small touch and his warm, smooth, tan skin gave me the butterflies I once loved so much.

My heart twisted, my head throbbed. I never thought I could miss someone like I missed Wayne. His touch was bring me to the brink of tears. I wouldn cry. I wouldn allow it. Instead I straightened myself out. I held my head high and let Wayne lead me slowly down the aisle.

My heart tugged at me in the most uncomfortable of ways. A smile plastered on my face. I look back at Lily and she gave me an encouraging smile. I smiled back at the beautiful bride to be. I kept my eyes straight looking out at the lake. Which was a terrible idea. I felt it as it happened. I tripped over my own foot in the sand. Waynes arm tightens while the other caught me just in time before I fell on my face in the sand. His arms wrapped around me felt too comforting, too good. I look up at him. His eyes smiling while he held me. My hands resting on his chest. The first real smile Ive seen from him came to his face and for a moment I smiled back. Forgetting everything that has happened between us. This just felt so right.

"Now this is the perfect example of what not to do! Taking any attention from the bride and groom will not do!" Beckys voice brought me back to reality. My face heated up in embarrassment.

Wayne clench his jaw. I wiggled from his grasp and he let me go. I smoothed out my dress while Wayne cleared his throat. I watch him as he shot daggers at Becky.

My face Im sure was red as a tomato like usual. I grab Waynes arm and we finish the walk down the aisle. We part ways in front of Luke. Luke nods at us with a small smile. I take my spot when the music changes. Still embarrassed beyond belief. Sammy nudged me, with a teasing smile.

"Wait! Pretend the little people are doin their jobs." Becky called out. We waited a few minutes as if Mae, Liam and Will were here.

Finally Lily made her way down the aisle as the music changed just for her. "I Can Help Falling In Love" by Elvis Presley blared through the speak. Lily was Smiling at the only one Im sure she saw. Luke. Luke looked as giddy as he did at that concert we once went to. I smile at the memory. Even if Wayne was the reason for it. Ill always remember it fondly.

Becky barked more orders and finally we were done. All of us women hugged Lily in a group hug. Luke shook the hands of his groomsmen and Wayne. Giving them their man hugs. It was supper time and I was ready to eat. Lilys parents and Lukes would be joining us in the dinning hall.

I begin my walk up to the building. Sammy was busy with Darren and Lily was smooching her soon to be hubby. The rest of the group was walking slightly behind me. What can I say? I was hungry. I needed food for comfort.

Out of the corner of my eye I see someone fall into step with me. I look next to me. Ronny walked with me. A smile on his face. His big glasses pushed up. He was kind of cute. I smile back.

"Ur Bailey right?" I nod at him.

"Yeah, Ronny?"

"Yup! Nice to meet ya."

"Likewise." I say halfway to our destination.

"You must be real hungry." He said teasingly.

"I am. I just want to eat and go back to my room."

"Ya gotta stick around and mingle." He said slyly. I seen Mike smoking a cigarette in front of the building. I wave at him and he does the same. Before responding to Ronny.

"Im not a mingler." I say.

"Well ya sure want ta make me mingle." He said winking at me. I stop in my tracks and raise my eyebrow at this man forwardness. His smile never faltering. The group was right behind us and I shake my head at the man. I begin walking again. He didn get the hint. Ronny fell into step with me as we came close to the building.

"So where ya from?" He asked right before we approached Mike.

"California." I say dully smiling in the direction of Mike. He put his cigarette out.

"Well, well ain it Bailey Smitt!"

"Mike how are you?" I ask as he hugged me with one arm.

"Im great kid." He said as the group which included Wayne headed to the front doors. Mike released me. He embraced his kids. Lily first and I walked inside thinking of how lucky Lily truly was.

We had an easy supper of hamburgers with all the "fixins." As Beth and Jodie, Lukes mom said. They had potato chips and other side dishes to go with. I ate quickly with Ronny sitting with me. Sarah, Milly and Ana sat with us. They looked at Ronny like he was crazy as he openly gawked at me. When I stood to throw my paper plate away he also stood.

"No." I snap. Maybe a little to loudly. He scrunched his eyebrows at me.

"Imma just throw my plate away." He said. I knew he was trying to make me feel like I was crazy. I roll my eyes before leaving the table.

"Hey, Lil Peach." Johns deep southern drawl came out as I throw my plate away. Ronny right next to me. He was looking John up and down.

"Hey, John. Im going to head back to my room. Wanna walk me?" I asked softly.

Johns eyes grew wide. He looked past me. A surprised smile on his face. He rubbed the back of his neck.

"Thats a mighty fine request Lil Peach, but ya know I ain gonna do that." He said. His eyes looking apologetic.

"I will!" Ronny announced. This was exactly what I was trying to avoid. I tried to give John a look. Like hello! Help a girl out! He just awkwardly smiled at me.

"No thank you." I tell Ronny as kindly as I could. Which was hard. When I turned on my heels and walked away I looked back at John. Ronnys back was to me. I put my pointer finger and middle finger in front of my eyes motioning between me and Ronny at John. Gesturing for him to watch Ronny. He smiled at me with a small nod. I caught Waynes eye turning, I look down after a few moments of eye contact. Every time that happened my heart did that uncomfortable twist.

I find Lily and Luke. Giving them both a hug goodbye till morning. Lily protested but I need to get out of here. I have a speech to perfect and I just wanted to go to bed early. I needed sleep. My emotions are all over the place. I could feel Waynes eyes on me as I walked past him. It made my heart race. God, what this man does to me.
